For those of you living under a rock, we officially launched the BoomBox earlier this month.
Even with the massive success of the Honey Badger, whether from video games, Hollywood, or the random encounter and experience at a local gun shop or event, it wasn't lost on the team at Q that there was still room for improvement. Maintaining a compact, submachine-gun-style weapon but beefing it up with the ballistics of a full-size battle rifle designed specifically for military operators at the most elite levels of Special Operations both domestically and abroad, ain't that hard…. right? Wrong. The BoomBox took an extraordinary amount of research, development, and innovation.
Until now, the only way to make a compact, .308-based AR platform or sub machine gun was to chop down full-sized guns. For example, the SR-25 from Knight's Armament has long been the world standard in that department, but it remains heavy and cumbersome even in its "compact" configurations. At the same time, ballistic efficacy dwindles as the barrel shortens. With Qs DNA being lightweight, fast-twisting, short-barreled guns with the Tier 1 operator in mind, there was no better company in the firearms industry to start addressing those issues.
The BoomBox gives shooters the capabilities of a full-sized battle rifle while emphasizing versatility, maneuverability, modularity, serviceability, and ease of use. The gun can go from an 8" 8.6 BLK shooting 350+gr subsonic expanding projectiles to a 16" 6mm or 6.5 Creedmoor with just a barrel swap. You can even modify it into a 12" - 20" .308 to extend its knockdown capabilities out to 1,000yds or more, or run more easily accessible ammunition. Even with these barrel swaps, you can still use the same magazines with full capacity and the same exact bolt, limiting the possibilities for failures and malfunctions.
8.6 Blackout (BLK) is the caliber for which the BoomBox was built for, though. The round has three times the energy of a 300 BLK out of an almost identical-sized package, all while being quieter than the groundbreaking suppressed cartridge that preceded it. Similarly to the caliber that made the Honey Badger famous, 8.6 BLK was designed to give shooters subsonic and supersonic capabilities in the same platform without adjusting anything or utilizing different magazines/parts. For the warfighter, this allows them to engage targets quietly and discretely in urban combat situations or close quarters with subsonic ammo. Then, with just a magazine swap to supersonics, they're ready for a gunfight and to engage targets farther down range with supersonic ammunition. All on the fly without having to adjust gas or change parts. For civilians, that means less complexity when picking the correct ammunition for a chill day on the range or an action-packed hunting adventure.
Even with Q's demonstrated ability and experience in innovating rifle platforms to be lightweight, compact, durable, and reliable, something as innovative as the BoomBox was a challenging project. Much like The Fix bolt action rifle from Q, something like BoomBox had never been done before, especially not to such an innovative extent. Over nearly three years of research and development, numerous changes and improvements were made to the initial BoomBox platform. Through testing, Q's engineers determined the need for unexpected features like steel feed ramps, super rigid top rails and handguards. They also designed a new feature that makes the Boombox the most reliable gun of its class - an all-new, never-been-done-before gas tube and charging handle crafted to overcome any potential failure points during operation and a groundbreaking recoil system now more reliable than anything found in the "old AR-10 platform". Oh yeah, all this while maintaining MOA accuracy at 300 meters, too.
The Boombox is now the lightest, most compact, and most reliable battle rifle on the market, and it can reliably and accurately shoot both suppressed super and subsonic ammunition. Development of the gun may have taken longer than everyone would have wanted, but Q is never going to push out a product to the market just to appease a schedule. But now the BoomBox is here, and you can be confident that the expensive ass gun you're buying was built the right way the first time. You don't have to worry about being a beta tester for the first iteration of the gun with the hope that you'll eventually love the third, fourth, and fifth generation of it. Paired with a Porq Chop or Short Chop, this weapon system is a true game changer for the warfighter, the armed citizen, and the hunter alike!
